About this deal

It is around half the strength of 18th- and 19th-century IPAs, and lacks the heavy hopping rate that, as the story goes, allowed those beers to survive months at sea to reach India. The two currents, the old cask tradition and American-inspired craft beer, started coming back together.

Harrison found a partner in Simon Webster and they hired two young brewing-school graduates, Italian Stefano Cossi and Scotsman Martin Dickie, giving them wide latitude in the brewhouse. Following an array of awards and national recognition, Jaipur catapulted Thornbridge into the spotlight, and the need for a new craft brewery became clear. Punk started with a similar malt and hop bill, set apart by the use of the New Zealand hop Motueka, but within a few years was dialed back to 5. Usually recognised at the First UK Craft IPA, Jaipur is the flagship beer of Thornbridge Brewery, the one that really helped solidify the brewery’s presence on the craft beer scene back in 2005. All sizes and measurements are approximate but we do try to make sure that they are as accurate as possible. We obviously think it’s delicious, but more importantly chief sommelier at Thornbridge James Buchanan has given the pairing a double thumbs up. Jaipur is our flagship beer, and the one that really put us on the map back in 2005 when we were just starting out.

In all versions, the nose and initial impressions are purely Pacific Northwest—grapefruit, sweet orange, fir. When American craft beer headed back across the Atlantic, it barely resembled the cask bitter that originally inspired it. It’s an absolutely smashing beer and it sneaks up on you a little — we still have people asking for it year after year which is testament I think to how good it is. Venturing to this taproom on the outskirts of Bakewell seems only fitting to try this infamous yet local brew.NOTE: Equipment for fermentation/brewing and storage/dispensing is not included and should be bought separately. Jaipur's hoppiness builds in the mouth and bursts with powerful citrus fruit flavours, culminating in a remarkably smooth finish and making it a deliciously drinkable IPA. Cask shuffles the elements a bit, smoothing the hops, accentuating the orange a bit more than the fir. Standard domestic lagers were 5% and, perhaps in an effort to seem more special, breweries tended to brew their pales and porters to about 5.

This Jacobean country house is located just outside of Bakewell, and dates back to the 12th Century. This is a beer I have always liked to contemplate and study before drinking deeply of it and it is truly one of the most influential beers of the last 15 years. It may not be reproduced in any way whatsoever without the prior consent of Waitrose Limited nor without due acknowledgement. Jim Harrison had hosted a few summer parties since he bought the crumbling Thornbridge Hall in Derbyshire, England in 2002, but this was the first at which he was serving his own beer.Approx 16-18cm long and 1 cm diameter – straight or slightly curved – dappled with fat and specs of pepper.
