So much can occur in this sliver of time—one minute can feel like a singular experience. There’s a pretty far-fetched reason (related to global warming) a the end for why the family had ended up with 365 penguins over the course of the year. The book knows its far-fetched, but it was still my least favorite part of the book. The ecological message is weak at best and probably undermined by the rest of the book (the penguins being in an unideal environment, etc.). But for me, the mathiness makes up for that. Ennui recurs and the former triangle moves through a transition successively into a pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, and decagon.
