About this deal

I like that some cultural elements are explained- for example, the names of the cats Granny gets in Thailand, Puyin and Puchai, are the Thai words for "little girl" and "little boy". This is an excellent book for young children, which can help develop counting as granny takes the reader on an adventure around the world with her. This book would be a great way to lead into activities and lessons about different countries and cultures. This rhyming story will take young readers on an adventure to different countries while teaching them to count along the way.

At the end of the story a list showing all of Granny's souvenirs and the number that she bought is provided. The book is cleverly done as a counting rhyme, tracking granny’s progress around the world and increasing the number of objects bought as she travels. Definitely will use in my teaching as there are multiple opportunities for studying cultures and their history. She lives in southwest England, and enjoys walking and working in her garden as well as doing nothing whenever she has the chance. My Granny Went to Market: A Round-The-World Counting Rhyme by Stella Blackstone is a rhyming book about a Granny who takes a magic carpet ride around the world. This stylishly illustrated counting book from a Best New Illustrator, opens with a vibrant cockerel crowing to welcome the day and ends with a solitary barn owl flying off the page and slipping into the night. This book is great for learning about other countries and cultures and can be a brilliant starting point for a cross-curricular project. From half a pawpaw to five jew-plums through to ten bananas, this girl’s love of Caribbean fruits is so infectious that you can almost taste the juice dribbling down your chin.

The different cultures add another layer to the story by maybe piquing some interest in a country the reader may or may not have heard of. The book is full of beautiful, big and bright pictures, drawing the reader’s eye to examine them in more detail. This book covers the numbers 1 - 10 and also geography as Granny rides a magic carpet (from Istanbul) to different markets around the world. Each page also provides a rich preview of what different culture look like on different parts of the world and the illustrations give a great representation of the geography. Reading this book, I actually learned about different cultures and things that went along with them.

Fly away with Granny as she takes a magic carpet ride around the world, collecting a steadily increasing number of souvenirs from each exotic location! Granny went to Market is a fun book about a Granny flying around the world purchasing different items. All of these objects are things that are well known for the area such as various tapestries from Istanbul, Nesting Dolls, Llamas, drums etc.

While this book is to help with counting each page is represented by a certain place around the world. Although these students may not be able to travel the world at this moment, it shows them about different cultures. This could also be a fun way to teach students about different items, cultures and traditions around the world.
