About this deal

Stormbird is the first of a series of books about The War of the Roses and I am sure it will be as successful as Iggulden's previous novels. I’ve always been a fan of Conn Igguldens style of writing, but this book is a new step in my opinion, one i wasn’t aware of the source until i read about his personal loss, something i think that has infused a certain extra depth and emotive layer which when coupled with the dramatic and extremely descriptive action packed style he has, makes this truly and exceptional book.

This novel is true to the theme and has some brilliant gory battle scenes with lots of blood and killing, its very descriptive, I’d say it has more descriptive scenes than it does dialogue but still manages to keep the reader engaged and overall I enjoyed it. This is a real shame as it breaks down what has always been a real strength of this series in the last little bit, which covers, arguably, some of English history’s most iconic moments in little over a hundred pages. I acquired it shortly after its release when I attended a talk by the author at Sheffield central library. UK Hardback First Edition FirstPrinting 2014 with Waterstone's War of The Roses exclusive short story. Conn Iggulden begins his book with the death of Edward III and his sons around his bedside, wondering what would happen to their beloved England.

It's a "light" type of plotting that doesn't care much for accuracy nor invests much in characterisation. Part Three describes the infamous Jack Cade’s rebellion in London amidst widespread grievances in society over official corruption and the weakness of Henry VI in the face of an ever strengthening France.

I often find that if you ask an Iggulden fan what their favorite book is, there is a clear divide between those who love the Emperor series and those who love the Conqueror series. To begin with, I thought he would be just a typical knuckleheaded bruiser who'd gather a rabble of ne'er-do-wells around him and soon meet his suitably sticky end. Richard Duke of York, Protector of the Realm, extends his influence throughout the kingdom with each month that Henry slumbers.Rage at the loss of France, coupled with high taxes and a sense that the king was weak, brought England close to complete disaster at this time.

Following on from Stormbird, Trinity is the second epic instalment in master storyteller Conn Iggulden’s new Wars of the Roses series. It covers around eighty topics, from building a soapbox racer and tying knots, to learning about famous battles and how to make potassium aluminium sulphate crystals. However, Conn Iggulden begins “Trinity” with a conflict between the Percys and the Nevilles, which is known as the Battle of Heworth Moor. While this is a historical fiction series Conn does an amazing job sticking to the facts while filling in holes. There's not much more I could say about this, it's a first installment in a longish series, and it does show because a lot is left underdeveloped or hanging out there by a cliff so you go pick the next book up. Whilst I enjoyed Margaret of Anjou as a narrator, I do think he will have to move away from her as her centrality of English politics begins to diminish with the new York reign.

Derry Brewer is a unique and complex character who works in the shadow to make sure that his king and his country are well protected. His poor health and frailty of mind render him a weakling king -Henry depends on his closest men, Spymaster Derry Brewer and William de la Pole, Duke of Suffolk, to run his kingdom. If you want a great historical fiction book that is engaging about the unrest in England before the Wars of the Roses, I highly recommend “Wars of the Roses: Stormbird” by Conn Iggulden. These battles and the names of the men and women like Richard III, Margaret of Anjou, Henry VI, Richard Duke of York, Edward IV and the Tudors are etched into the history of England. When he wakes from his first bout of illness, he dismisses Richard Duke of York from being Lord Protector and reverses everything that Richard did. Black hardback(silver lettering to the spine, two small nicks and dent on the edges of the cover and spine) with protected Dj(two small nicks and crease on the edges of the Dj cover),both in fine condition. As nothing else this drives Edward to proclaim himself king, aided by his friend and mentor Warwick both of whom want nothing more than to defeat the killers of their fathers and retrieve their honour and heads.
