About this deal

Each action is by itself very straightforward - even combat is a lightweight affair of rolling dice to see how many enemies you defeat, with the chance to play a helpful ability card - meaning that turns never feel like the multiple decades they represent in-game. Join the community and come discuss games like Codenames, Wingspan, Brass, and all your other favorite games! Since the military units were all the same color (and distinguished with a flag bearer in the same region as the military units) it is difficult to see what units are yours and where you have the strategic advantage. With anyone familiar with other Fantasy Flight games, you should already know what you are getting with the box and insert.

Over a series of turns, players use these cards to build their civilizations from single cities to sprawling empires filled with wonders and technology. Also, at the end of combat, wounds aren't healed and only strength minus wounds (aside of other combat bonus) are counted to declare the winner.

Rather than keeping track of the volumes of different resources a player controls (like wood, oil and gold in most PC games, for example), everything boils down to money in the boardgame for simplicity.

A game that I was quite intrigued by and definitely wanted to check out was Civilization: The Board Game . The board game named Civilization (1980) by Francis Tresham inspired Sid Meier to create the original Sid Meier's Civilization (1991) computer game. Here’s the thing though, even though you are looking at different resources and barbarian starting locations and of course the way the terrain is set up……you are seeing the same tired old grasslands, mountains, forest, hills and deserts over and over again. During the game, players can acquire advanced versions of their starting focus cards, which have greater impact on the game. Adds Persia, Sumer, Samita and Indus people and covers the areas of Persia, the westernmost parts of the Indian subcontinent and Arabia.New map tiles, some very different from the base game and the first expansion, also including 2 new relics. The lawsuit was settled amicably in 2000, with Avalon Hill selling all rights to the Civilization franchise to MicroProse. There are five cards for each age but you end up only getting to choose 2 for each age during a normal game. This continues until one of the players has achieved one of the 4 victory conditions stated previously. There’s a surprisingly detailed city-building aspect, too; the buildings you construct in a city affects its abilities, such as requiring a port for fishing or a market to build more advanced military troops (when playing with the original game’s expansion, bundled in the recent Monumental Edition by default).

As a disclaimer, we played this game 2-player, and I would assume that a third player would keep some of this in check, as the two people that were losing would be able to join forces to gain ground on the person winning. They may then be placed in any city, but there is a placement limit of one troop in a city per "size" of the city. Almost everything I liked about the game also frustrated me, and so I'm really confused about whether I like it - that makes it hard for me to really give it a great score. This is easily mitigated by being sure what you're committing to battle, but could be a problem if you think you're attacking someone with your Industrial Dragoon, but it turns out to be your Ancient Horseman, for example. It gives you a nice layout of all the components at the beginning and even has a section if you are playing your first game to show you how to set it up to get your feet wet.The goal of the game is to advance (on the AST) through the Late Iron Age and become the most advanced civilization on the map board.
