Final Score: 4 Stars – Historical accuracy only enhances the fun whether players are defending England or raiding its northeast coast. Vikings is a historical area control game representing the years after 878 AD in the northeastern coast of England. Academy Games has also adding in some really cool historical references that bring the game play to life. If there are 14 or more Viking Control markers on City Shires at the end of any round, the Vikings immediately win.

There isn’t much you can do to impact/influence combat, so you’re at the mercy of rolling better and using enough troops to make sure you roll you maximum number of dice. So while players are waiting for their turn and deciding which card to play next, they can read the small text at the bottom of the card to learn more about the historical setting. Leaders bring huge waves of Viking Reinforcements, and they add exceptional mobility to invading Viking armies, allowing them to continue to battle and pillage as they move.After movement, the player draws back up to 3 cards (revealing and shuffling/drawing if the hand contains no movement cards) and their turn ends. At 15mm you can tell that they’re soldiers carrying axes and spears but beyond that, the detail is a bit lost.

However, any decisions where to apply the hits and, I would argue where to move them, should be freely discussed and agreed upon within your team. Something like that to give movement options while also ensuring you have event cards at your disposal all game. If after rounds V, VI, or VII the Treaty cards of all factions on one or both sides have been played, the game ends. The English can move more individual armies than the Vikings and are initiating fewer attacks at the beginning of the game.The Vikings will often get 4 or more Hits when they roll, so unless I have a lot of Fyrd left after my first roll, I will command-decision anyone I can to fight another day. Movement is a simple affair, there is no unit drop off or pick up, and armies must stop when in a region with the enemy.

The Viking Leader cards are shuffled by letter on the back and formed a deck – with the first card, letter A, being placed face up. Keep in mind that you will not get any Fyrd when defending these non-city spaces, so I never leave more than 2 units there and command-decision out when I don’t Hit. I’d argue that 2 players is the ideal count, allowing you to control both forces on your half of the conflict. The treasures and stories gained from these attacks have allowed the Norsemen to raise huge hosts of eager men seeking glory and riches.Although the Vikings lose a movement if a battle lasts more than one battle round, I generally care more about killing as many Berserkers as I can.
