About this deal

Washing Machines – your tops are catching on something in your washing machine such as a torn drum or something that you have washed with your tops like a jean or trouser zipper. Elya follows Madame Zeroni's directions until the last day, when he takes a bath instead of carrying the pig up the hill.

The only plants mentioned are two oak trees in front of the Warden's cabin; the book notes that "the Warden owns the shade. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.

Elya must go on an adventure to win his love's approval and prove his own worth and he is eventually placed under a witch's curse. You get to learn the tragic history of Stanley's no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather.

Middle graders can enjoy the fun, learn a few lessons, and try to patch together the mystery behind the story as they read along.

She becomes the outlaw "Kissin' Kate Barlow", so named because she leaves a red lipstick kiss on the cheeks of the men she kills.

This was classed as RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013). If you add a bit of dust of fate with these treasures, you will get the story of a boy named Stanley Yelnats, the main protagonist in this novel. It creates a visual focal point to showcase children’s learning and encourage exploration and discovery.

This book is a gem for middle grade readers who want a fun story that also has a great lesson about honesty. I think the biggest problem is that I'm too old for this book, though I know it sounds a little pretentious. Camp Green Lake is in the middle of the desert, a dried up lake, and every day a scary ward and guards, amongst who a 'Mr Sir', make the boys dig holes there. Stanley Yelnats' family has a history of bad luck, so when a miscarriage of justice sends him to Camp Green Lake Juvenile Detention Centre (which isn't green and doesn't have a lake) he is not surprised. I mean, these kids committed crimes, or at least they were accused of committing crimes, but they weren't BAD or EVIL.

Both Stanley and Elya are similar to fairy tale characters and are morally good, heroic protagonists who must overcome the challenges predestined for them. Stanley and Zero, however, are safe from the lizards because they smell like onions (which the lizards are known to avoid). Two companion novels have followed Holes: Stanley Yelnats' Survival Guide to Camp Green Lake (2003) and Small Steps (2006).Stanley and Zero are given the most thorough characterization, but the other ones we know very little about. Another element of the story that held my interest is the way the author weaved the stories from the past and the present together. It’s secured into place by squeezing together its inbuilt legs which spring out to keep the cover in position. I enjoyed this book just as much as I did the first time I read it, and finished it in a single sitting. It is very clever how the author ties in the past with the present and how characters are linked together in ways you would not expect.
