About this deal

We had a GPS in our rental car - this was the first rental we've had in France that the speed limit was NOT shown on the GPS in our rental car. I will be arriving at CDG early November, pick up a leased car, and then head directly to Loire Valley. Used by millions of locals and tourists alike, this series provides an excellent balance between coverage of a sufficiently wide area and detailed road presentation, plus topographic information not found on other road maps. The speed cameras are everywhere, and while there are signs warning that they are in use, often the actual speed limit is not posted for a few km afterwards.

pg 27 travelling from Dunkerque to Mons on A25 refers you to page 44 when on fact you need to go to page 30 to pick up the A25 to Mons via Lille. It is large scale so is excellent for the roads, but also for touring it includes geographical features and a lot of information for exploring interesting sites. For France I really like the AA Big Easy Read atlas - at 1:190k I think its the largest scale one around. No folding and unfolding of maps, no fiddling around trying to find the right one, and really easy to find the right page. The material is very durable and hard wearing and can also be rolled up for storage and wiped clean. Now based on IGN’s digital data used to produce the country’s topographic survey at more detailed scales, presentation has been sharpened to make small local roads stand out better. Find any address on the map of France or calculate your itinerary to and from France, find all the tourist attractions and Michelin Guide restaurants in France.

New for 2024, this specialist easy-to-read A4 road atlas is designed for the British motorist in France. I use the Michelin yellow departmental/local maps for most regions and the green, very detailed zoom maps (for the Landes, Côte Basque, Pyrénées). It is a very large scale, 1cm to 2km which does mean a long journey covers several pages but it does seem to have nearly every village so finding aires in smaller places is easier. The plastic-coated pages not only make the atlas rain and weather resistant, but it means you can easily trace your route on the pages either with a permanent or dry erase marker. This helped me in one area to decide using a short toll as against the cheapest viaMichalin route panner. It has the sixth largest highway network in the world, trailing only the United States, China, Canada, Spain and Germany. An extraordinary work depicting the historic administrative areas and roads of France and its colonies including Senegal, Martinque and Algeria.
