About this deal

One of my favourite scenes was a dinner with the elderly poet Philip Larkin, who the author had known as a young undergraduate. There are also pleasing asides detailing other gentlemen’s sailing adventures over several centuries. I really felt like I got to know Elise and worryingly, she is so inspirational, I've signed up for a marathon!

Just goes to show that there’s a ram-spinning, swashbuckling adventure right there on your doorstep. Reading this book at the moment and finding it very satisfying and up there with Passage to Juneau - by the same author and in a similar vein. Put Jonathan Raban on a boat and the results will be fascinating, and never more so than when he’s sailing around the serpentine, 2,000-mile coast of his native England. She admits this herself and considers herself lucky, despite the constant negativity and self doubt (of which there was a lot).Elise is so candid about her experience and I found this approach refreshing and generous and, at times, hilarious. However hard, tough, excruciating and doubt-driven a challenge might be, at heart it's a funny, funny story. Her journey is amazing not only for its length but also for all the hurdles she overcomes - like map reading and cows and imposter syndrome.

This whole book is a moan fest about an over privileged young girl who has everything given to her and so can't handle any adversity and by the end still doesn't seem to have learnt anything. When he actually talks about his adventures and the experience of sailing around the British coast, this book is excellent. Re-reading it, I realise I was simply too immature to appreciate the skill in the writing, the incisive accuracy of observations and the many wonderful musings on Life through Raban's eyes. I was therefore a bit disappointed that she actually relied very heavily on staying at people’s houses night after night and didn’t actually pitch her first tent up until well over 6months in.The tale he tells is of its time and place yet offers wider understanding of the psyche of the British.
